As a Software Development Manager, you will be working closely with our staff developer(s) and reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager to help oversee the technology vision , software quality, and operational excellence. Partnering with engineering, you will define the technical metrics and outcomes for the team to strive towards. You will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the PC Optimum (PCO) loyalty program, overseeing the design , development, and maintenance of innovative solutions that contribute to the loyalty program experience for the millions of Loblaws/ Shoppers customers that use our products on a daily basis. The engineering manager will hold responsibility for identifying bottlenecks in the process and roadblocks to success for the team and clearing these roadblocks
 
**Please note, this role is hybrid - 3 days in office and 2 days remote**

 

What You'll Do

  • Cultivate a deep understanding of the portfolio of applications we utilize, along with their respective strengths and weaknesses, to provide solutions to existing and future challenges. 
  • Lead technical architecture for a whole component and/or cross-functional team. 
  • Define the long-term vision for your team, aligning with the company's strategic and tactical goals.
  • Translate project goals and product roadmaps into organized technical tasks. 
  • Through your knowledge of industry trends and tools, together with your own experiences, guide the team to improve our software, our environment, and our process.
  • Provide guidance and direction to the development team to tear down obstacles and keep initiatives on target and moving forward.
  • Coach and mentor developers in the team through technical design sessions, code reviews and pair programming.
  • Provide technical guidance and support in resolving critical production issues.
  • Collaborate with business and product stakeholders to successfully deliver new features and capabilities. 
  • Work with Product Managers, Designers and Business Stakeholders in the roadmap definition process.
  • Plan and manage product sprints. 
  • Construct design documents and documentation to aid in maintenance and code reuse. 
  • Have one-on-one meetings with your team members. 
  • Conduct performance reviews. Set accountability for team members.
  • Be an active participant in hiring new team members and providing performance management.

 

Does This Sound Like You?

  • A deep understanding of software development with a minimum of 5 years hands-on programming expertise. While you may not code every day, understanding the context of your team’s work is paramount.
  • A track record of successfully mentoring and growing other software developers in your previous roles as a direct manager.
  • Experience managing both web and mobile application development teams. 
  • 3+ years of guiding scrum-based teams
  • Opinionated about what it takes to produce great software but remains receptive to others' ideas.
  • Experienced with software estimation, often confronted with complexity and uncertainty.
  • Makes decisions based on data. You are well versed with tools to measure every aspect of the application and your team.
  • Developed large applications in a team environment and are comfortable working in a very collaborative cross-functional team setup.
  • A great communicator. You can present complicated solutions to non-technical audience in a simple and logical way. 
  • Open minded, likes to learn and share knowledge and always looks out for “a better way” to do something.
  • 5+ years of full stack development experience using (React, Kotlin, Swift, RxJava/RxKotlin, Coroutines, RxSwifts)
  • Experienced with building complex consumer facing software using cloud technologies for continuous integration and deployment (either of GCP, AWS, Azure with knowledge of cloud-based repositories and containerization tools including but not limited to Git, Docker, Kubernetes, Istio etc)
  • Good understanding of SOLID principles and reactive design pattern
  • A strong understanding of Security Architecture.
